Just thought I would give this a go and flag how the "oldies" of the club are travelling and encourage the support of other Wolves who enjoy spectating on a Sunday afternoon with a cold beer or two ....
As a result of our catch up game from a November washout we played our 4th game of the season last Sunday the 10th out in the hot Olinda sun.
Olinda batted first and out of some fabulous tight bowling from "Smithy" and Co. a total of 7/100 was set by the other "red hats" perhaps "Sooks IRH" . In response our Masters quickly passed the Olinda total at two wickets down and many overs remaining - with Olinda pulling the pin !!!. Great knocks from "Sooty" Roth and Dell easily saw another win to Montrose which gives us a 4 wins out of 4 record, with 3 games to play.
Our next game is at home ( and also our last home and away game on our hallowed Montrose turf ) against Warrandyte before 2 away games against Nth Ringwood and Kilsyth. All being well we are a good chance to participate in finals down the track.
There is always a good laugh for our spectators and of course the injury tally thereafter so if you have a clear afternoon on Sunday come along and enjoy.
To all you readers of veterans affairs here is another update from the weekend just gone.
Round 5 saw Montrose entertain Warrandyte on a day of total contrast to the preceding week's heat - it was bl....y freezing with the mountain drifting in and out of view - a sure sign of top conditions.
Warrandyte won the toss and chose to bat - bugga !! One opener belted us around a bit and eventually retired albeit we dropped him a couple of times, primarily owing to hands that wouldn't defrost. Once departed the rest of the team struggled against our Montrose attack with good bowling and a couple of run outs as well .... Roo tok 3 for and the StiffMeister claimed the final wicket, again owing to a great outfiled catch again from Roo. Warrandyte all out for 95.
Before stepping out onto the ground in reply, a fabulous afternoon tea was provided far in access of what was needed but in keeping with the usual Montrose standard. A special mention for the hot mini quiches that were a great hit !!
Speaking of hit - our bats went out to face the Warrandyte bowling which in the main wasn't too bad. Wozza whacked a quick 30 + as we rapidly approached the Warrandyte score in terrible conditions being rained off a couple of times. We passed the score 4 wickets down and with about 15 overs left to be bowled.
We are now 5 wins from 5 games with two games against Nth Ringwood and Kilsyth to follow.
G'Day Wolves and sorry to say Bacon the run came to an end last Sunday at Kilsyth.
After a close game and some good all round efforts Kilsyth passed our 149 runs with a couple of overs to spare with them finishing on about 157.
The other match of interest in terms of finals was a surprise !! with Warranwood defeating North Ringwood.
This result has ensured us 2nd spot on the ladder with a home final for Montrose this Sunday 21st against Bayswater Park from 1.00 pm. The other final is between Kilsyth and Nth Ringwood, with the two winners to play off in the grand final next week - Sunday 28th ....
The forecast is for a hot afternoon so come along have a cold beer and watch the "older brigade" slug it out for the club.
Update time again and the news is good !!!!!! The vets endured a bl***dy hot day again on Sunday to record a semi final victory against Bayswater Park. Testy for a short while (surprise surprise) but all good for a few beers after the game
So - It is Grand Final time and hopefully the first of many given the great position the club is in as finals approach.
We come up against Kilsyth again in what hopefully will be payback time for our loss a couple of weeks ago, in what was a close game. The match is at Pinks - I think !!
Just thought I would give you an update on how the Montrose Vets are travelling along as the end of the season approaches for those on the wrong side of 40 (just !!)
5 games into the season with one to play we are undefeated and sitting on top of the ladder a game clear and with a healthy % gap over Warrandyte in 2nd spot.
Finals a certainty and hope we can go better than last year ... Our next couple of games will be at home so come down to our great clubrooms for a beer or two !!
Sure am Boof - just been let out of the psych ward from looking after last year's testosterone charged Under 18's. It's Ok boys just kidding and it is great to see you guys having a great season. Good luck as finals approach
Hey Wolves - last post for the 2011 season for the Vets as it is all over for another year, but the good news is we finally cracked it for the premiership after a long time coming.
After a good win over Olinda in the semi we met Norwood in the Grand Final on Sunday 27th in what was a big win on the scorecard but still a challenging game.
Great effort by Fish and Rob to keep it together all season with a great bunch of blokes running around every second Sunday.
Hopefully this will be the first Montrose premiership of many for the season - so good luck to all in finals ....
